KCAT CAN: Leading an extraordinary life
Leading an extraordinary life
by Maria Kathrina Lopez Yarza
November 12, 2012
It really does feel great whenever people tell me that I have touched their lives and influenced them in one way or another. Actually, I am not really doing anything greater other than enjoying my life and living it the way I want it.
I accept whatever life gives me despite the odds and enjoy whatever comes out from it. Some may complain that it is easier said than done, but it’s not really the case. Yes, life is hard, but doing the things that you can is not really that hard. It all depends on you and your attitude.

KCAT CAN: The gift of hearing
The gift of hearing
by Maria Kathrina Lopez Yarza
August 6, 2012
Despite being deaf, I am still so much grateful because my hearing loss did not occur from the time I was born. I was still able to hear the sounds of the world for 22 years.

Way back in 2008, I received a message from a concerned father through my Multiply account, Kuya John was searching for something to help Katrina, his two year old only daughter, the youngest of his three children. Kuya John and his wife Ate Karen wished they had a little girl and after four years of waiting Katrina was born. A dream came true.

I am living in silence, but I am not silent
I was thinking about what my topic will be for my next column in MB.. Since my cochlear implant isn't working so well the last few weeks, it's like I'm deaf again. Haha. And then I decided, my topic will be: about me being deaf.
I was recalling what I felt before, when I learned that there is a possibility I might go deaf & when that happened. I just learned that I have increasing brain tumors (tumors, meaning more than one ;P) and now I'm going deaf.. But my reaction was: OK. That didn't change a thing. Just read my column today. Haha ;P

Shop & Help
I learned this site through Ate Karen Rambongga.. Visit Anja's online shop. Shop and help.

[...]Anja is deaf. She has profound hearing loss on both ears. She wears hearing aids but they are not enough to make her hear everything. Doctors and audiologists suggest cochlear implants but these are very, very, very expensive. (Mas mura pa bumili ng bagong Honda Civic, pramis.) In the meantime, I've enrolled her at the Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf where they use total communication or all modes that can be used for communicating- from made up gestures to lip reading to formal signing. (I've noticed, though, that most, if not all, of the students at this school sign, even if they are able to talk.)

This is definitely a good news..
Stem Cells Could Cure Deafness
Stem cell researchers have made a breakthrough they believe could someday cure deafness, the Times of London reports. The British team, working with stem cells from the inner ear, have successfully grown early versions of the cells that enable hearing and now aim to create functional cells that can be transplanted into the inner ear to reverse hearing loss. Researchers say a cure for total hearing loss is still at least a decade away, but believe their work can be used immediately to test new drugs and probe the causes of deafness. "This research is incredibly promising and opens up exciting possibilities by bringing us closer to restoring hearing in the future,” said a research director at the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.
